| WINDMILL FARMS | |||||
What an amazing thing to see, almost futuristic. Eight gigantic, yet beautiful windmills perched on a scenic hilltop above the town of Garrett. The wind was blowing and several of the windmills were being tested that afternoon. Each windmill base stands 60 meters and the diameter of the blades from tip to tip is also 60 meters. Surprisingly, the huge blades cut through the air without hardly making any sound at all. Each tower is controlled by computers which monitor wind speeds and wind directions. The heads can be rotated toward the oncoming winds or shut down and locked during a storm. The
windmills were manufactured in Denmark by Nordex - Borsig Energy. Nordex builds
several different styles of wind turbines, ours are the N-60 Model. Check out the
"Fact Sheet" link provided below. (Remember when looking at the fact
sheet, that everything is in metric and that in Europe, commas and decimal points have
reversed meaning). After manufacturing, they traveled across the Atlantic Ocean on
an eighteen day voyage. Once they were brought on land in Eddystone PA they were put
on trucks and driven the rest of the way accross the state to Garret PA for final
assembly. As of March 2000 there are only 200 N-60 models running in the world...
176 in Germany, 16 in Denmark and 8 in the United States. This makes us the first
community in the US with the Nordex N-60 Wind Turbine. |
